The Mentor – a short stories for kids and children about a wise and trusted Teacher guiding a Young Man.
Once upon a time, there was a young man who had been working in a factory for many years. He learned the skills from one of his seniors and whenever he faced any problem in the factory while working, he used to go to his senior to get a solution. He made that senior his mentor. The mentor always taught him that the secret of success is to always talk less and do more. He always followed the preaches of his mentor. Few years passed, the mentor became old and retired from the job while the young man became a technician in the same factory. The young man continued to do his work with full dedication and hard work as he was taught by his mentor with each passing year.

One day, the young man was very upset with his job and manager, so he decided to visit his mentor. On visiting, the old man saw that he was not at all looking happy and seemed to be in trouble. The old man asked if there was any problem with him? Then the young man said that I have been working so hard for all these years, I always keep quiet and just focus on my work in the same way as you had taught me but I don’t understand that the people who don’t work hard and don’t even have my capabilities have all been promoted to higher positions but I’m still there only, since many years. The old man thinks for a while and says to the young man, you just take a day off from the office, giving any reason for the day off. The young man thanked and left quickly to ask for a leave.

After a day of leave, when he returned to work, the manager called him and told him that in his absence things didn’t go well in the factory. Realizing his importance, the manager decided to promote him to the position of the senior technician. The young man thanked the manager and the manager encouraged him. The young man was very thankful for his mentor’s wisdom. The young man now thought that this was the secret to success. And from that day onwards whenever he felt like he deserved more, he took a leave from office. Now he started taking leaves more frequently.
One fine morning, he went to the office and saw that he was not allowed to enter and he was expelled from the job. And his position was offered to someone else. He couldn’t believe it. He immediately ran to his mentor. And told everything to him. The mentor replied, actually you didn’t do everything that I told you. When I told you to take a leave from the office, you were so excited and immediately ran. You didn’t listen to the second half of my idea. The young man said, the second half? What is there in the second half? The old man said the second half was more important than the first one. Now listen carefully. You understood that no one pays attention to you and your hard work but have you ever thought, who would pay attention to that bulb whose light goes off frequently. In the same way, why will they keep you if you take days off frequently?

The Moral of this story – Make others realize your importance, but never make them realize again and again that it may hurt you only.
